We found her in the Rattlesnake. She humored us by riding up sawmill road, then dropped us like we were cat 1's who upgraded too soon once we hit single track. She was gone until we saw her riding back UP Drop Out on our way down.
She's legit. And strong. And seriously modest. I stopped her on her climb and forced her to give me her email address. Now, she's one of MT Alpha's strongest riders.
This weekend Julie straight up WON 12 hrs of Disco in Salmon, ID. She raced solo and completed just as many laps as the team who won the mixed four race and one less lap the the guy who won the solo MEN's race (Ian Foster- another local Missoula rider). Can you say faster than delicate rose, budding in the new sunlight of spring?
Still not convinced she's a killer on a mountain bike?
She won 12 hrs of Disco.... With a broken rib. A broken rib! She went down hard 2 weeks ago on overlook and the next day she was out at our Skills Clinic, learning how to bunny hop. Crazy. Crazy in the best way possible.
Her and her husband, Russ Blackhurst, move to Missoula a year ago and opened Clark Fork Dental. He's a dentist and she's a hygienist. Cute right? And as far as we're concerned it's the best dental clinic in town.
Julie's top tier event this year is the Butte 100 ("the most difficult 100 mile mountain bike race in the country"). I think it's safe to say, who ever is crazy enough to go up against her will have a hell of a time trying to keep up with her and her Specialized full suspension S-Works. She rides that thing like it's going out of style. Which it's not. Great bike.
Anyway, Julie is probably the sweetest, most humble of the Alphas. Watch out for her next time you're riding in the Snake. You'll most likely get more than one chance to see her out on your ride because she'll lap you.
Oh and watch out Sportsman's. We still haven't released our secret weapon.

This is the only picture we have of her because she goes too fast for the camera! (Photo: Tom Robertson Photography) |
